Miniatures are complex pieces of art, which is what makes them so appealing. They are fine art, portraits that were commissioned by the sitters and painted from life. However, their function combined both subject and object: They are simultaneously art, historical artifact, keepsake, ornament, and record of ancestry. Portraits in general evoke mystery, with their visual suggestion of character, and the lost narrative that is implied. The connection between the portrait and viewer is both intimate and powerful, and often enhanced by knowledge of the artist's background, as well as details of the sitter's life.
